ARRANGING FOR VOICES AND INSTRUMENT

Lorenz Maierhofer’s vocal arrangements are characterized by his immense competence and sensitivity in the way he handles voices, be they solo voices, mixed choirs, women’s choirs, male-voice choirs or children’s choirs. If he is arranging for instruments, one senses that, as a multi-instrumentalist, he has a practical familiarity with various instrument registers, especially, as a violinist and trumpeter, with strings and wind.

Ethno MusiC

Lorenz Maierhofer’s longstanding and deep affinity with the music of different cultures has given him a profound knowledge of many areas of world music. His interaction with the original roots from which he develops choral arrangements in their respective styles, is always sensitive and respectful. He usually encounters ethno motifs on his musical journeys: for example SPIRIT COME, or THE RIVER IS FLOWING in the USA and Canada, SALAMU MAMA MARIA, HAMBANI KAHLE or UYINGCWELE BABA in South Africa, or MAORI AVE MARIA in New Zealand. His ethno arrangements or compositionally enhancing reworkings take singers and audiences on journeys to far places.

An exceptional concept composition with ethno gospels is Lorenz Maierhofer’s ETHNO MASS FOR PEACE, composed immediately before the second Iraq war. Quotations from great men and women, for example Nelson Mandela, Mother Teresa and Martin Luther King jr. among others, have been built into the arrangements. An audio example of this can be heard in the song SINGA YESU SINGA from Uganda.

FOLK MUSIC HOME AND INTERNATIONAL

Lorenz Maierhofer’s arrangements of Alpine and international folk music span a broad musical arc from the witty folk song LASS DOCH DEN KOPF NICHT HÄNGEN / TOM DOOLEY (Don’t Hang Down Your Head) to the sacred classic SEGNE DU MARIA (Maria Bless). Outstanding are his demanding pieces (composed for choir competitions), for example TRIALEIHO ALPIN or THE SPIRIT OF THE DRUM, while audiences are captivated by witty and humorous pieces like the AUGUSTIN-RAP or the polka song HANS BLEIB DA (Hans, Don’t Go!).

CLASSICAL THEMES

Lorenz Maierhofer has arranged numerous secular and sacred classics, like, for example, LOBE DEN HERREN (Praise the Lord) for choirs SATB + trumpet, published in the choral booklet ICH SINGE DIR MIT HERZ UND MUND (I Sing to Thee with Heart and Voice). Choir directors and music teachers have repeatedly asked him to produce vocal arrangements of well-known solo lieder like ICH LIEBE DICH or of instrumental themes of classical composers. This has led to several songlike pieces that have also become popular choral classics. A collection of these choral arrangements has appeared in CLASSIC LIGHT A CAPPELLA.

Rock, Pop & Evergreen

Numerous choral arrangements by Lorenz Maierhofer from the spheres of ROCK, POP and EVERGREEN (> listen, for example, to Evergreen-Medley) have become popular choral classics. In his choir-book series 4 VOICES he has edited his own 400-page choir book with 77 titles by 25 distinguished arrangers: POP 4 VOICES. All 77 titles have also been released as choral recordings on CDs.

With arrangements from the spheres of rock, pop and evergreen I make sure as a matter of principle that the singability of the originals is good, as only then can they find really good and complete expression in an a-cappella arrangement.

ALPINE POP BALLADS

Lorenz Maierhofer’s choral arrangements of the three most successful ballads of the Alpine pop scene have achieved exceptional popularity with choirs. Alongside Maierhofer’s own “ÜBERN SEE” (Across the Lake), they are among the most frequently sung titles of the genre:
